Our Projects - School Farm Visits

Our second project is funded by Leicestershire County Council - SHIRE Environmental Fund.

To provide educational farm visits on food waste and environmental issues for local school children.  The children have had a great time on their visits (who doesn't enjoy donning the wellies for a morning).

They have been able to pick veggies, take them back to the classroom and make lovely healthy soup fresh from the farm.

Here’s some information from WRAP (Waste Resources Action Programme) and the Less Waste site: -

  • The UK produces 9.5m tonnes of food waste per year

  • UK households contribute 70% of this total food waste, throwing away 6.6m tonnes of food of which 4.5m tonnes are estimated to still be completely edible

  • This ‘thrown away’ food is enough to create an additional 10.5 billion meals if the food was utilised.

  • Bringing this down to families – households waste around 12% of their total food spend by unnecessarily throwing away food

  • Utilising this food instead of discarding it could save UK families around £700 a year

On a wider scale this food waste has a negative impact on environmental issues – the UK’s food waste emits 25m tonnes of GHG (Greenhouse gases) every year- that’s 5.5% of our entire national GHG emissions

According to Sainsburys £1.17billion worth of fruit, veg and bread is wasted each year and according to WRAP potatoes are the most thrown away item of food with 1.6billion potatoes thrown away each year.
